We are a small IRC network, currently composed of one server owned by a private individual. You are welcome to come and check us out, run bots, play games, etc.
Ok, the RecalledToIRC server was down for a while, due to networking issues. I was unable to get services to link to the ircd, and I was unable to get my personal EfreakBNC account to connect to it or the public bitlbee server I run either. I quickly narrowed the issue down to the fact that localhost wasn’t working. So I tried connecting to the external IP address instead of the loopback adapter. No go. I tried several things to fix this, and none of them worked. So I shut down the server. Today, I found a forum post describing my problem. Apparently the loopback adapter was not started at boot (the server is kinda screwy and networking has to be brought up manually). So I ran sudo ifconfig lo up, and voila, the server can now network with itself. The IRCd, services, bopm, and denora stats are all running again.
Now, what I want to know is this: Why is it that without the loopback adapter, I can’t connect to my own external IP address? Shouldn’t the packets be sent to the router and then routed back to the server? Why is the system designed such that you can’t communicate with yourself at all without the loopback?
But it doesn’t seem to have started apache or mysql or any of that other on-boot stuff, so I’ll be starting it all by hand :/
EDIT: I am abandoning RecalledToIRC as a network and as a server. It might come back up with some other admin, if one of the people I contacted wishes to take over the ircd.
Emails were not received (google apps catchall is NOT working correctly) so I didn’t pay for the server on time, and it was suspended. When I did pay for it, it doesn’t seem to have booted correctly, and I cannot access it. A ticket has been submitted requesting help. In the meantime, its a good thing I have a tumblr set up here.
