I was unable to get services to link to the ircd, and I was unable to get my personal EfreakBNC account to connect to it or the public bitlbee server I run either. I quickly narrowed the issue down to the fact that localhost wasn’t working. So I tried connecting to the external IP address instead of the loopback adapter. No go. I tried several things to fix this, and none of them worked. So I shut down the server. Today, I found a forum post describing my problem. Apparently the loopback adapter was not started at boot (the server is kinda screwy and networking has to be brought up manually). So I ran sudo ifconfig lo up, and voila, the server can now network with itself. The IRCd, services, bopm, and denora stats are all running again.

Now, what I want to know is this: Why is it that without the loopback adapter, I can’t connect to my own external IP address? Shouldn’t the packets be sent to the router and then routed back to the server? Why is the system designed such that you can’t communicate with yourself at all without the loopback?

Server is back up

But it doesn’t seem to have started apache or mysql or any of that other on-boot stuff, so I’ll be starting it all by hand :/

EDIT: I am abandoning RecalledToIRC as a network and as a server. It might come back up with some other admin, if one of the people I contacted wishes to take over the ircd.

Server Issues

Emails were not received (google apps catchall is NOT working correctly) so I didn’t pay for the server on time, and it was suspended. When I did pay for it, it doesn’t seem to have booted correctly, and I cannot access it. A ticket has been submitted requesting help. In the meantime, its a good thing I have a tumblr set up here.

Alternative access, EfreakBNC

If you are an EfreakBNC user, you will want to follow this to keep track of server issues, as they will be posted here. This account also posts to twitter. Whenever the server is running, this tumblog will be available at www.recalledtoirc.net via an apache reverse proxy. however, please bookmark this link, tumblr.recalledtoirc.net, instead, as if the server is down, the reverse proxy will not work and will be useless for seeing server issues.

Not much here yet

Check back later. Most of our website (wiki + wordpress) has been migrated onto the other pages (links under the header at the top).

I’ve had this server going for several years now and never really done much with it. This tumblog replaces the wiki (which frankly sucks) and the wordpress blog (which also sucked, but I never gave away the url for it)

Anyways, click one of the links in the header to connect using Mibbit, your own client, or jIRCii. We’re actively looking for users and anyone who hosts their channel with us gets free webspace, logging, custom services bots, etc. I’m pretty flexible on this stuff; webspace is limited to 500mb, has php, and etc. I’ll consider opering anyone who’s willing to help expand the network (once they’ve proven trustworthy). I’m personally rather lazy, and am unlikely to do much else myself.
